Food Waste: think at the sink

A billion kgs of food waste is disposed of each year in Ireland. Households account for about a third of this, or an average of about 70 kgs per head (over 150 lbs in old money). The cost is estimated at between €400 and €1000 per household.

It is further estimated that 6kgs  in every 10 of this waste is avoidable (scrapings, leftovers, gone off fruit and veg, etc), and another 2kgs in every 10 is potentially avoidable (bread crusts, potato skins); This means that up to 8 out of every 10 kgs of food waste could be avoided if we really tried. (And much of the remainder such as peelings could be composted to benefit our soil and kept out of landfill).

This is a moral issue, so think before you throw.
