WHAT IS A "SYNOD "?

A synod generally means a meeting of high-ranking church personnel empowered to make decisions of some importance about the Churches' teaching and practice.  They are also called " councils ".

Synod means (in Greek) walking together on a journey. Our first Sacrament is Baptism. We, the baptised, are all called to live the Good News as well as to spread the word. We believe that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Saviour and this is proclaimed in the time and in the context of the culture in which we live and work.

The purpose of the Synod is to explore how the Church can continue its mission with the power of the Holy Spirit. In each Catholic Church diocese, a synodal process of preparation began last year. This process will culminate with the Synod of Bishops in Rome in October 2023. The bishops aim to lead the Church to become more synodal that is in Communion, participation, and mission. It is a Synodal Pathway. All Catholics are invited by Pope Francis to prepare for the Synod at the diocesan and at the parish level. We begin with the Parish where we are.

We are on a journey- a synodal Pathway- walking together in prayer, in listening to one another's experiences of the Church, and in reflection on the scripture and the traditions and the history of the Church. The purpose of this process is to create conditions that will help us as a community to be guided by the Holy Spirit in order to discern what God wants from us as a people at this particular time and context.

Some parishioners have kindly agreed to be “animators” in the synodal preparation process.  An animator will speak during the Masses on the weekends 19/20 February and 5/6 March about the synodal preparation.

CENTRAL HEATING: €49,463 has been paid to the contractor who reinstated the central heating in the Church. €11,560 has been donated to date. €15,000 is required to restore heating to the sacristy area. The total cost of Central heating reinstatement will amount to €64,000. Thank you for your generosity to date.
