Baptism is the gateway to the Christian’s life of faith, and the means of their access to all the other sacraments. Through Baptism a person is freed from sin, both original and personal, and is reborn spiritually as a child of God and is called a “Christian”- a member of Christ and is incorporated into the community of God’s People – the Christian Church- and becomes a sharer in Christ’s Word and Sacrament. A person is baptised by water in the name of the Holy Trinity- the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A person will not be admitted to any of the other sacraments unless they are baptised.
Baptism at Holy Family Parish
Baptism is normally celebrated at Holy Family Parish at 1.00 p.m. on the second and the fourth Sunday of each month. Parents are advised to arrange for the Baptism of their child at least one month in advance of the desired date of their child’s Baptism. This is done by a parent calling in person at the parish office in the Parish Resource Centre during normal office hours (10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Monday to Friday, bank/public holidays and other breaks excepted). Attendance by parents at a pre-baptismal preparatory meeting, led by members of the parish baptismal team normally held a few weeks before the Baptism, is also expected and encouraged. Parents are requested to present their child’s birth certificate, to be returned to them, in accordance with GDPR, for confirmation of the child’s identity and parentage for the entry in the parish baptismal register. One of the god-parents, at least, must a baptised and confirmed Catholic aged sixteen years and upwards. The god-parents undertake to support the parents in the Christian upbringing of their child. This will, later in their child’s life, involve the preparation and presentation of the young Christian for the reception of the Sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation.
