A very happy and blessed New Year as we pray and hope for a remission of the Covid – 19 pandemic and its omicron variant.
CHURCH HEATING
The service of G&J Engineering Ltd. (Saggart, Co. Dublin) has been engaged with diocesan approval, to reinstate the church heating. Work is expected to begin this month and is likely to go on for three weeks. While the work is in progress, there will be some inconvenience resulting. Areas of work will be appropriately zoned for safety and it will be possible to continue with the weekend and daily celebration of Mass with reduced capacity.
Cost: Given the constraints of present parish finances, this solution is, in the view of the diocesan architect taken on advice, is a pragmatic one towards providing some heat to the church in a satisfactory manner and at a cost affordable to parish finances. The cost is so far estimated at 50,000Euro inclusive of V.A.T.
To date of writing, (31st December 2021) donations towards the cost of repairing the heating system received since August 2021 amounted to 8,980 Euro including donations of 2,350 Euro from the Christmas Triduum Masses. Thank you for being so generous and being mindful of the reduced income since the lockdown in 2020 and the limited capacity of the church in 2021.
BACKGROUND
The gas-fueled boiler was serviced in early 2021 and the engineer noticed that the pressure was not right and he suggested that there might be leaks in the pipes and the central heating system causing this. Leaks in the pipes caused the excessive outflow of water throughout the circuit and a large bill of 2,300 Euro from Uisce Eireann for water usage during term one of 2021 focused minds on the need to do something. The Parish Finance Committee took the matter under consideration. A leak detection specialist, the A-Team, detected multiple and recurring leakages throughout the gun barrel pipes of the church central heating system and reported that the pipes (Nearly 50 years old) are not now fit for their purpose. They advised the replacement of the existing pipes. 5,248.36 Euro was paid to the leak detection company for its services (August 2021). The architect for the Dublin Diocese was informed and he advised accordingly. Several potential contractors were contacted and some of them visited the site and presented their views of the situation as well as proposals for the reinstatement of the heating system. The contractor selected (G&J Engineering Ltd. Saggart, Co. Dublin) provided a satisfactory and affordable solution particularly with the retention of the present boiler deemed to be in good working order.

New Year’s environmental resolutions
Signs of climate change and global warming are multiplying. In our own parish birds are already collecting branches for nesting – in the middle of winter! Scientists warn that an enormous Antarctic glacier is being slowly detached by warm water from below, and within a few years will slide into the sea. It is estimated that this will increase sea levels around the world by up to 40 cms, that is by well over a foot. This could mean periodic inundation for coastal areas such as Sandymount and Ringsend – one small example of how climate change affects us all.
The moral? Do more to change your lifestyle, even if it is only to walk an extra half mile instead of driving; reusing plastic bags at least once; buy loose fruit and veg where possible, take up your pen and write, or email, to your local TD expressing support for more effective climate action policies. Remember, a convoy can only go as fast as its slowest ship, and governments can only move as fast as their electorate (that’s you and me) will let them. So, encourage them.
And build in care for the earth to your prayers.
Finally, one practical step you can take is to come along to the next meeting of the Parish Environmental Group, Wed 12th January at 10.30 am in the Resource Centre committee room. Give it a try!
SYNOD PATH
Your attention is drawn to Synod prayers available on the tables near the church doors. Please take a card home with you and id possible pray it frequently for the success of the Synod. This prayer is the prayer that has been recited for the invocation of the Holy Spirit on Ecumenical Councils and Synods. It is centuries old.
